A celebration of parenthood

There's an abundance of songs about adult love, but there's a love that doesn't get much air play -- the love we feel for our newborns. I wrote and recorded these songs as a tribute to that love after I had my first son. Here are some of my thoughts about my WISHMAKER CD:

Finding new expressions

After my son was born I noticed that I was mouthing time-worn platitudes and cliches when asked what being a new mom felt like. That seemed insufficient to express the depth and richness of my experiences, so I embarked on saying it more fully through songs.

A celebration of the positive

It seemed to me that there was undue emphasis on the hardships inherent in having and raising children. I didn't want to add to that already prevalent conversation, so I consciously chose to celebrate the rewards of having children in WISHMAKER.

Honouring our children

I'm not really telling anyone who has loved a child anything they don't already know. Instead, my songs serve as reminders, because every parent forgets. We get busy, overworked, tired, preoccupied with problems. That's when we take our children for granted. I've had parents tell me that when they listen to my songs it reminds them to be grateful, to honour this very special relationship.

The universality of the songs

These songs were written out of my personal experiences and interpretations of new motherhood. However, that doesn't preclude that there's a universality about the topic. I'm convinced that anyone who has ever loved a child can relate to the feelings and experiences I'm writing and singing about in WISHMAKER.
